Somalia and Kenya strengthen their bilateral ties after the newly elected Somalian president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited Kenya and held parleys with his Kenyan counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta recently.  Foreign ministers of both countries announced that they have agreed to restart air shipments of khat also known as a miraa-a type of leaf- used by many as an intoxicant and appetite suppressant- after a 2-year hiatus.

Somalia is one of the biggest markets for miraa and central Kenya cultivates the plant in large quantities. The two leaders also agreed to immediate trading of fish from both countries. The visa restrictions also will be eased to kick-start the trade. Border trade will be resumed.
