On May 5th the parliamentary committee in charge of organising the election announced that presidential elections would be taking place on May 15th. In Somalia, the presidential election is done by members of parliament and senators. To win the elections, a candidate must win at least two-thirds of the votes, or 184 votes.
Western supporters of the Somali government, particularly the United States, have been urging to expedite the Presidential elections. They were concerned about the delay in the electoral process, as it was worsening the instability in the country.
