Algeria aims to become a major player in the energy transition. To achieve this, the country has launched a major programme to develop renewable energies, via its hydrogen plan, as well as its programme to install a production capacity of 15,000 megawatts of green electricity by 2035. Sonelgaz, Algeria’s national energy company launched several calls for tender this year as part of its programme to develop green electricity generation. The solar power plants to be built as part of this programme will start producing electricity in 2025.
Sonelgaz, through its new energies’ subsidiary, has launched a call for tenders for 2,000 MW of capacity and awarded contracts for the construction of 15 solar power plants, while another call for tenders is expected by the end of the year.
In addition, the call for tenders for the “Solar 1000” project promoted by a partnership between Sonelgaz and Sonatrach is due to be launched in early 2024. Algeria will be able to produce 2,000 megawatts of solar energy by 2025, thanks to the commissioning of the 15 solar power stations to be built under the first call for tenders issued by Sonelgaz’s new energies subsidiary, stated Boukhalfa Yaïci, Chairman of the Algeria Green Energy cluster. The contracts would shortly be signed with the companies contracted under this call for tenders. Yaïci pointed out that the Solar 1000 project would begin to take effect in 2024, stressing that the project was now entirely in the hands of Sonelgaz.
