- Somali forces battled for more than 30 hours to contain the fighters who had stormed Mogadishu’s Hayat Hotel on 19th august after the sunset prayers.
Somalia’s official sources have confirmed that the siege at a hotel in Mogadishu has ended, leaving 21 dead and 117 hurt. Somali police chief Gen Abdi Hassan Mohamed Hijar said they ended a deadly attack at Hayat hotel by Al-Shabaab rescuing 106 people including children.
Somali forces battled for more than 30 hours to contain the fighters who had stormed Mogadishu’s Hayat Hotel on 19th august after the sunset prayers. The attack started with several loud explosions and gunfire. The forces took some more time to check that the entire place is safe from mines and explosives. This is the first major terror in Mogadishu after Somalia’s new President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, took over in May.
The Hayat Hotel is an upscale hotel frequented by government officials, businessmen and people from the diaspora community. The al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The attack was condemned by many countries. In a brief statement issues , the US assured that it will continue to support the Somali government in the battle against terrorism.
