Across the East and central African region, Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya and Rwanda have recorded a surge in coffee export revenue.

Despite a fall in export volumes, Uganda’s coffee exports managed to record a 39% increase in revenues compared to the previous year. According to the latest statistics from the state-owned Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), in the 2021/2022 coffee year, coffee exports generated a record US$ 876.4 million in revenues.  Most of the regions under coffee cultivation were affected by drought which led to lower yields. As a result, the volume of coffee exports fell to 5.85 million 60kgs bags of coffee for last year’s fiscal year compared to 6.5million 60kg bags exported in the previous year. Italy, Sudan, Germany, India, and Morocco are the major markets for Ugandan coffee. Tunisia, Somalia, Egypt, Libya, and Kenya also import significant quantities.

Ethiopia, which is famous for Arabica coffee, exported 300,000 metric tons of coffee during the last 12 months, generating US1.4bn in revenue.

Rwanda’s coffee exports stood at 15 million kgs accounting for US$75.5 million for the 2021/2022 coffee year. The country registered a 23% increase in coffee revenues from July 2021 to June 2022 in comparison to the previous year. Rwanda’s coffee fetched an average price of US$4.58/kg against US$3.62/kg of 2021.

Driven by higher volumes and better prices in the international market, Kenya’s coffee earnings in the 11 months to August 2022 also increased by US$81 million. According to the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE), returns in the period hit US$210 million compared to US$$129 million in the 11 months to August 2021.
