Led by actress Yvonne Nelson, the coalition of civil society groups, entertainers, and business owners took to the streets to pressure the government into finding a lasting solution to the energy crisis.

Ghana’s capital Accra was rocked by a massive demonstration recently as civil society groups took to the streets to demand an end to chronic power shortages in the country. The rally momentarily brought vehicular traffic to a standstill along the typically busy Madina Road.

Led by actress Yvonne Nelson, the coalition of civil society groups, entertainers, and business owners took to the streets to pressure the government into finding a lasting solution to the energy crisis.

Ghana has been facing many economic woes including severe power shortages. Once the blue-eyed boy of multilateral funding agencies and the West, it now faces higher inflation and massive unemployment. Consequently, it faced a severe foreign exchange crisis. Analysts said that Ghana, once managed its economy prudentially and efficiently defaulted most of its external debt in December 2022.
