Africa50, a leading pan-African infrastructure investment platform and multi-vehicle asset manager, has announced the appointment of Sérgio Pimenta as the Chief Executive Officer of its Infrastructure Acceleration Fund (IAF). This strategic appointment marks a significant step in Africa50’s mission to scale up private investment in critical infrastructure across the continent.

Pimenta brings with him more than 25 years of global experience from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), where he most recently held the position of Vice President for Africa. His extensive background in development finance, coupled with deep expertise in emerging markets, positions him to lead the next phase of growth for the Africa50 IAF.

In his new role, Pimenta will lead the fund’s efforts to attract large-scale institutional and commercial capital, directing these resources toward impactful infrastructure projects designed to bridge Africa’s growing infrastructure gap. He will work alongside the Africa50 team and partners to identify and develop a robust pipeline of bankable, transformative projects across sectors such as energy, transport, and digital infrastructure.

The Africa50 Infrastructure Acceleration Fund is a closed-ended private equity fund with a lifespan of 12 years. It was launched as part of Africa50’s broader strategic initiative to mobilise private sector funding for infrastructure development. To date, the fund has raised USD 275 million in capital commitments from 22 institutional investors spanning both African and international markets. This includes a notable first close of USD 222.5 million in December 2023, which drew support from a diverse mix of public and private backers.
