As an outcome of the recent visit by Egypt’s President, Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, to Serbia, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced that Serbia will be exporting grain and wheat to Egypt . Serbia also had recently obtained a certificate for exporting wheat, apples, and beef according to the Serbian president.

Addressing a joint press conference with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Belgrade, Vucic disclosed that the two countries are examining the possibility of signing a free trade agreement by the end of the year as well as cooperation in the health sector. It was also reported that discussions are on to restart the direct airline with Cairo, which was cancelled due to Corona, apart from the current chartered flights to Egyptian locations.

Russia and Ukraine were the two biggest wheat exporters to Egypt. The country has been facing a severe shortage of wheat supply after the supplies stopped after the Ukraine war. The Egyptian General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC) had floated last week an international tender to purchase 815,000 tons of wheat for shipment over August, September, and October 2022. Though India had previously agreed to ship 500000 tonnes of wheat, the quantity was cut down and the contract was signed for 180000 leaving a big deficit. France has recently expressed its willingness to supply wheat to Egypt.
