Senegal’s ruling coalition suffered crushing defeats in recent elections in the capital and other major cities. Many predict that it will cast shadows in the forthcoming presidential elections in 2024.

Barthélemy Dias, the candidate of the opposition coalition Yewwi Askan Wi who won the municipal elections in Dakar last Sunday, celebrated his victory with a caravan in the streets of the Senegalese capital. He said it was a victory of the people and a victory of dignity and pride. He opined that President Macky Sall throughout his reign has been indifferent to the needs of the people. There is a strong political will against the present regime and what happened in the municipal elections would have a bearing on the 2024 presidential elections.

Opposition suspects President Macky Sall (60), may run for a third term for the presidential elections falling in 2024. Deadly riots last year happened at the arrest of 46-year-old opposition leader, Ousmane Sonko.
