The Senegalese are gearing up to vote for the country’s presidential election after months of dilly-dallying today (Sunday). Over 7 million voters will go to the polls to elect a new leader from 19 candidates, who are in the fray.
Presidential aspirants include Amadou Ba of the ruling coalition, chosen by President Macky Sall, the opposition is represented by Bassirou Diomaye of the former Pastef party, who many feels would be the leading contenders for the post.
There are also candidates such as Khalifa Sall, a former government minister and former mayor of Dakar, who could play spoilsport. Anta Babacar Ngom is the only female presidential candidate. However, analysts say she has only a slim chance of winning. A lot of uncertainty surrounded the elections, which was initially slated for February this year, but postponed leading to an unprecedented constitutional and institutional crisis. The timeframe for the election campaign was cut short to less than two weeks.

The opposition has warned against any electoral fraud. However, the authorities have given assurances of a free and fair vote. Until recently Senegal was considered a role model for democracy in West Africa.
