Senegal will go to polls in February next year. President of Senegal, Macky Sall, launched the national dialogue initiative, nine months ahead of the presidential elections. He said the national dialogue is aimed at discussing the problems being faced by the country and arriving at solutions through consultations and strengthening the social and democratic fabric of the country.
There is popular unrest in the country in the run-up to a court verdict against President’s political opponent Ousmane Sonko. A few opposition parties denounced the presidential dialogue and are proposing to launch a counter-dialogue. Interestingly, the big question is whether President Macky Sall will contest for the third term for president as he is yet to announce his candidature. The opposition parties allege that the national dialogue is nothing but to make ground for his re-election. Macky Sall has earlier mentioned that he was eligible to contest since his term would be counted only from the time when the changes were made in the constitution, to effect the maximum of two terms for the president.
