The Senegalese Constitutional Court annulled Senegal’s President Macky Sall’s decree on rescheduling the presidential election. The ruling stated that the law on the postponement of the election, adopted on February 5, contradicted the country’s constitution.
Outgoing Senegalese President Macky Sall confirmed that his term would end on April 2 but did not name a new date for the presidential election. The President said that the elections could be held before or after April 2″ but added that he did not think it would be possible before April 2. The election date would be determined after a “national dialogue” set to begin on Monday. This is to include the government, the opposition, and members of civil society.
In early February, the Senegalese parliament passed a law postponing the presidential election until December 15, 2024, as the opposition was forced out of parliament before the vote. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed concern over the postponement and urged the authorities to set a new date for the election. Following this, the Senegalese Constitutional Court declared last Friday that a decree to reschedule the presidential election has been annulled.
