Consultants will begin an in-depth study on the possibility of having a second port in the region of Mahébourg, Vieux-Grand’Port, and Bois-des-Amourettes. The Budget 2024-2025 has allocated Rs 54 billion over three years, through special funds for the project.

The Public Sector Investment Program for 2024-26 is attached to the budget speech, presented last Friday, special funds were allocated to state companies for launching new projects.

The three parastatal bodies, whose budget exceeds ten billion rupees, are the Central Electricity Board, Metro Express Ltd, and Airport of Mauritius Ltd. The Central Water Authority, however, did not get its due importance. The Central Electricity Board ranks first in three-year investment projections in the 2024-25 budget documents.  Twenty projects have been identified by the treasury to be financed by special funds with an estimated cost of  Rs 18.2 billion.

For phase 4 of the Metro-express, linking Curepipe to La Vigie and the extension to Gare du Nord, an investment of Rs 11 billion has been allocated. These two projects for the extension of the metro are currently under study.

Airport of Mauritius Limited will get Rs 10 billion over three years to build a new control tower and expand the Plaine Corail airport among others. The Rodrigues Public Utilities Corporation will obtain Rs 940 million over three years for water distribution and desalination. National Social Living Development Ltd is also included in this list for phase one of the 8,000 social housing projects. Rs 6.8 billion will be injected there until 2026. For the Central Water Authority, only Rs 22 million have been identified for the replacement of worn pipes.
