Burkina Faso continues to face political instability witnessing the second coup within a year. Militants took over Burkina Faso’s state broadcaster on September 30th night to announce they had deposed President Paul Henri Damiba who was in power for just eight months.
The country continued to be in turmoil over the weekend with gun fires and protests in the capital. On Oct 1st the members of the new junta appeared on TV again and accused France of trying to reinstate Damiba. The self-styled leader, Capt. Ibrahim Traoré accused France of sheltering Damiba at a French special forces base on the outskirts of Ouagadougou. There were reports of attacks on French institutions after the rumour that Damiba was supported by France. According to the reports, the ousted President had refused to relinquish office and warned that the impoverished country will plunge into another war. But as per the latest reports, the country’s new self-declared leader, Capt Ibrahim Traoré, has received Lt Col Paul-Henri Damiba’s resignation. The announcement followed attacks on French institutions after it was reported that Lt Col Damiba was sheltering at a French military base.
The current development and escalation of tension in Burkina Faso appear to be between the two leaders, who have mobilised different factions of the country’s armed forces. Apart from the political uncertainty, the poverty-stricken country has also been plagued by regular attacks on civilians from an Islamist insurgency.
The African Union, ECOWAS, France and the US condemned the unconstitutional change of government in Burkina Faso when the country was working towards the civilian rule.
