The Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA) has registered an increase by 35 percent in sea cucumber catches on Seychelles’ Mahe Plateau for the 2019-20.
In this season, there was an increased catch. Most of the vessels were operating compared to the previous year when they encountered mechanical breakdowns and lack of manpower. Data showed that the recent fishing season recorded a total catch of 356,925 individual sea cucumbers for the three targeted species – flower teat fish, white-teat fish, and prickly red.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), for the first quarter of 2020, exports of sea cucumber were valued at US$1.175 million representing an increase of 3.5 percent compared to 2019. The 16 tones worth of sea cucumber were all exported to Hong Kong.
Catching of sea cucumber is one of the most monitored fisheries in Seychelles, since it is an endangered species. The authority depends heavily on data to monitor the fish stock and to ensure that proper information was being relayed by fishermen to the authority.
