South African NGO Fountain Rivers Earth Sanctuary Hennops (FRESH) is on a water cleanup mission to remove plastic waste from litter traps placed two weeks ago on the Hennnops River in the Clayville township in Tembisa, north-east of Johannesburg.
The accumulation of waste is a major problem and the reason for contaminating waters of the river. The pilot cleaning up mission already collected a huge quantity of rubbish from the rivers. The NGO put the nets up at the beginning of the rainy season to try and stop the huge avalanche of plastics floating in the rivers as a result of rains that washes the trash into the river .
The project has a human side also. It helps to create livelihoods from waste collection. That gives employment to local people by taking their help in the river clean-up, particularly during the season when employment is hard to come up. Upon completion of the mission and collation of valid data, FRESH hopes to take on the rest of the rivers in South Africa. It has also a global ambition to extend the activities to other parts of the world.
