South Africa’s new airline ‘Lift’ was officially launched this week with its first flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town. LIFT is co-founded by Gidon Novick, formerly head of budget airline Kulula, and Jonathan Ayache, ex-general manager of Uber South Africa.
The Founders were unfazed about the launch when airlines across the world are still struggling to survive following months of coronavirus lockdowns. The maiden flight of the budget airlines reflects the confidence of the Founders that the aviation and tourism sector will soon bounce back with the launch of the vaccines. Jonathan Ayache stated that with the vaccines in sight, people will start travelling to see family, friends and business colleagues and will also continue to explore the world
The airline opened pre-launch sales last month. According to the company’s statement, the airline has already sold more than 30,000 tickets. The offer says that travellers can change or cancel reservations more than 24 hours before departure without incurring penalty fees. According to the airline, it will operate Fourth Generation Airbus A320s and plans to avoid a cash-heavy operational model that hit its rivals. The all economy class Lift will operate between commercial hub Johannesburg and Cape Town.
