South Africa’s Covid-19 lockdown, and associated ban on the sale of tobacco, is more than three months old. Majority of smokers have run out of legally-acquired cigarettes. Many of them refurbished their stock by buying from the black market.
Some of those placing orders with BAT said their stocks were about to be over. They have kept the stock by bulk buying shortly before the ban came into effect. Retailers also are telling that smokers are worried about their dwindling stocks and are concerned about uncertainty surrounding lifting the ban.
