SA’s Airlink to Connect Cities in Mozambique to Neighbouring Countries

Regarding flights to Mozambique, Airlink resumed flights to Maputo, Beira, Pemba, and Tete in October 2020, with variable weekly frequencies. The airline also operates flights from Johannesburg to Vilanculos, with frequencies increasing to 11 weekly flights starting in January, 2024.

The South African company Airlink could boost local development if allowed to operate flights to Nacala from Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, following contact being established by the Governor of Nampula, Eduardo Abdula.

According to ‘Notícias’, Abdula met an Airlink team, including the carrier’s regional manager, Linomi Mohotane, and its head of station in Nampula, Felismino Chale, on the sidelines of the 6th edition of the Nampula Economic Fair (FENA). At the time, the Airlink team expressed interest in operating the route, initially with two flights a week.

A team from the company is expected to visit Nacala in the coming days to conduct further market research. The governor of Nampula gave assurances of the necessary assistance to ensure Airlink’s operations resume as soon as possible.

The airline resumed domestic flights to several cities in South Africa and neighbouring countries, including Mozambique, in October 2020, after they had been suspended due to COVID-related travel restrictions. More recently, in January of this year, Airlink resumed flights to Nampula after a temporary suspension due to a court order that could have led to the seizure of its aircraft.
