Independent Democratic Action (ADI, opposition), led by former Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada, won legislative elections in Sao Tome and Principe, with a total of 36,549 votes. This is as per the preliminary data released by the National Electoral Commission (CEN). There was a delay of 29 hours in announcing the provisional data, which led to protests from ADI supporters.
CEN president Judge José Carlos Barreiros declined to present the distribution of seats by party, as usual, referring to the Constitutional Court for this task. He also said that the parties have presented discrepancies in their own projections.

The Movement for the Liberation of Sao Tome and Principe/Social Democratic Party (MLSTP/PSD), of Prime Minister Jorge Bom Jesus, stood second with 25,531 votes, while the Basta movement, received 6,874 votes. This party was created only three months before the elections. The Movement of Independent Citizens/Socialist Party (MCI), which took part in the election in coalition with the National Unity Party (PUN) received 5,120 votes.
Patrice Trovoada claimed the absolute majority with 30 seats. The claim came at a time when the National Electoral Commission of Sao Tome has not yet released preliminary results of the legislative, local and regional elections.
