The name of Teodorin Nguema Obiang Mangue the eldest son of Equatorial Guinea’s president and currently the Vice President of the country has been mangled in corruption cases. In 2011 DOJ seized millions of dollars worth of assets from Teodorin including a beachfront mansion in California, a private plane, a fleet of luxury cars, art collection, jewellery, etc. The decade-old corruption investigation by The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has been settled after Teodorin forfeited nearly $30 million in assets. The DOJ has transferred $19.3 million to the United Nations, to pay for 1.2 million Moderna Covid-19 vaccine doses for1.2 million Equatoguineans through COVAX.

Almost US$237 million worth of assets has been recovered from corruption cases involving Teodorin. Switzerland has $27 million after it sold 25 luxury cars seized from Teodorin.  France has to return $177 million after its courts seized his Paris mansion and other assets.

This is a glaring example of the deep damage of corruption in Africa and the power of international investigations to bring justice. It is to be seen if the looted funds will be returned to the people. The US, UN, and other governments have to honor their commitments.
