The region has been in the grip of violence for years let loose by Islamist militants. France intervened to beat back the jihadists. Later, jihadists scattered and regrouped, taking their campaign into central Mali in 2015. Subsequently, the rebellion spread to neighboring Niger and Burkina Faso, Chad and other Sahel regions. The continued disturbances has affected close to 29 million people across the region, who urgently need humanitarian assistance.
Some 5.3 million people have been displaced by Sahel-wide insecurity. Thousands of schools were closed and 1.6 million children are projected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition. Soaring food prices is another challenge to be addressed.
