The Government of South Africa has decided to introduce new measures to promote inter-African trade by reducing customs duties on imports from seven countries on the continent. Implemented from 31 January, this tariff-easing measure as part of the implementation of the Inter-African Free Trade Agreement concerns products imported from Algeria, Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, and Tunisia.

For Algerian exporters, whose numbers and activities have grown steadily over the last two years thanks to the new policy introduced by the public authorities to encourage exports, this new measure opens up new opportunities to place their products on the South African market at advantageous terms, especially as the two countries are now linked by a direct air link provided by the national airline since the end of August 2023.

These new facilitations for exports to the African continent, it should be recalled, are in addition to those brought about by Algeria’s official accession in December 2023 to the Guided Trade Initiative, as part of the process of effectively implementing the Greater African Free Trade Area (GAFTA).

As a result of this accession, exporters from these countries will now be able to trade with operators in the partner countries of this initiative, without customs barriers and by the GAFTA agreement, which aims to develop and intensify intra-African trade.
