South African Business tycoon Patrice Motsepe and his family have pledged R1-billion to fight COVID-19 in South Africa. The decision was announced by Motsepe in a virtual press conference with business partners, Sanlam, African Rainbow Capital, African Rainbow Minerals and others. Motsepe revealed that they are also procuring sanitisers, disinfectants, Personal Protective Equipment. The proposal also includes improving access to water for ” poor rural and urban communities by purchasing water tanks, drilling and equipping for borehole water and also building sanitary facilities”. Apart from this, the Motsepe Foundation will also provide R5-million to university students affected by the shutdown.

The grim reality of a global shortage of ventilators means that Africa may suffer even more due to the scarcity of life support systems. Africa completely depends on the import of the machines and equipments from various countries including the US, Germany and China.
