The conservation-minded hotel group Sextantio, believes in preserving the disappearing architectural heritage of its location. After the success of its signature projects in Matera and Santo Stefano di Sessanio in southern Italy, it is launching its third project in Rwanda, on Lake Kivu’s Nkombo Island.

Speaking to media, Daniele Kihlgren founder of the project, said that the Rwf250 million facility will be unveiled by February, this year. The  project is developed keeping in mind the identity of the place. Tourists, both local and international for mountain gorilla treks and Big Five game drives are expected to enjoy the unique facilities in the lodge on Rwanda’s largest island, spanning an area of roughly 22 square kilometres.

It is different from a typical African Luxury resort. The two thatched-roof huts inspired by exhibits in the Ethnographic Museum in Butare are built in a vernacular style with bamboo, and straw-like structures and are equipped with modern comforts such as electricity and hot water. The huts contain traditional Rwandan beds with layered straw mats and mattresses.  Kihlgren added that the construction was funded individually. The proceeds will go to Sextantio Onlus, a nonprofit organisation he founded in 2008 to provide health insurance to residents with treatable diseases like malaria. There are no tariffs but are by donation only. The visitors may interact with local fishermen, basket weavers and others who call Nkombo Island their home.
