A number of Rwandan containers that overstayed at Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam were allowed to leave after the ports authority agreed to waive demurrage charges and other incidental penalties for delays in cargo clearance caused by Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. More than 2,000 containers had been released in the past week. Over 250 to 300 of the affected containers have been cleared to leave the port on a daily basis.
Rwandan authorities are reconciling figures from industry to know exactly how many containers are still stuck at the port so that they can work towards securing their clearance. The initial figures given by the local chamber of commerce and services put the number of overstayed containers at 2067, while Dar-es-Salaam port alone accounted for 2000 and Kenya’s ports of Mombasa and Naivasha ICD accounting for 67 consignments.
The Kenyan authorities also agreed to consider the delay as the penalty free period. According to the order issued by the Kenyan port authorities all cargo held at its ports would enjoy extra seven days of free demurrage penalties effective from 1st July.
