- The economic ties between the two countries are poised to reach new heights with the signing of seven cooperation agreements on the side-lines of the Rwandan President’s visit to Zambia.
Rwanda’s president Paul Kagama led a high level delegation including several cabinet Ministers to Lusaka on a two day visit from April 4-5.The visit saw signing of several key agreements between the two countries. The economic ties between the two countries are poised to reach new heights with the signing of seven cooperation agreements on the side-lines of the Rwandan President’s visit to Zambia.
The signing ceremony was presided over by President Paul Kagame and his host, President Hakainde Hichilema. The deals signed covered investment, trade, cooperation in taxation, agriculture, fisheries, livestock immigration and health. A statement from Zambia’s Presidential office said that Zambia is keen to learn and share best practices in the areas of ICT from Rwanda and also rebuild the Zambian economy to generate jobs.
Zambia is among the major trade partners of Rwanda. It is a major source for sugar, corn, and soya bean for Rwanda. The two way trade in 2020 was around $20 million. It is reported that the significant growth of bilateral ties was achieved through the joint efforts of an established Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation cutting across many sectors.
The political ties between Rwanda and Zambia ran into rough weather in 2020 when Rwanda alleged Zambia of supporting rebel groups working against Kigali based on the accusations that surfaced during the trial of the hero of the movie ’Hotel Rwanda”. Lusaka denied the allegations. The President’s visit comes after two years after the allegations and shows that the bilateral ties have been restored to normalcy.
