President Paul Kagame and the President of Ugandan Yoweri Museveni, met on April 24, in Kampala and discussed several issues including bilateral ties, regional peace, stability and cooperation. The visit of the Rwandan President to Uganda came after a four year gap.
The two neighbouring countries had a strained relationship over the past almost four years. Lieutenant General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Commander of the Land Forces in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), travelled to Rwanda earlier this year and met President Kagame. The meeting brought about some positive developments like the reopening of the Gatuna border which had been closed for almost three years as a result of the strained relations between the two countries. The visit by the Rwandan President is another positive development towards normalising the bilateral ties.
The Rwandan President was in Uganda to attend the 48th birthday party of Museveni’s powerful son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who has been instrumental in bringing the two neighbours closer.
