Confirming the news, UCI president David Lappartient said that Kigali, the Rwandan capital will provide a magnificent backdrop for the event’s first appearance on African soil. Cycling is highly popular in Rwanda, with a number of riders joining the competition in Europe. Morocco was also a bidder to host the event.

On the criticism about Rwanda on the issues of human rights, UCI president David Lappartient defended the decision to grant Rwanda the opportunity. He pointed out that ‘sport and politics cannot be mixed’.
