Pakistan is one of the largest consumers of Rwandan tea and accounts for over 40 percent of Rwanda’s tea exports in volume. The product has been sent via Kenya through the Mombasa tea auction.

At a meeting between the Pakistani High Commissioner to Rwanda Amir Muhammad Khan, and Chairperson of the Private sector federation (PSF) Robert Bafakulera the High commissioner announced that Pakistan will be directly importing tea from Rwanda instead of buying it through the Mombasa Tea Auction in Kenya. The move is expected to give a major boost to Rwanda’s export of tea to Pakistan.

Currently, Rwandan tea is sold at auctions in Mombasa. It is hoped that once executed, the new arrangement will create a steady market for Rwandan tea in Pakistan without having to go through third parties. Moreover, this can enhance the profit margin of exporters. The High commissioner added that the move will help Pakistan to get original tea from Rwanda, as sometimes the Rwanda tea is mixed at the port leading to inferior quality. He hoped that the new cooperation arrangement will pave way for more avenues for investment.

Rwanda imports rice, textiles, agriculture machinery, and surgical instruments, etc from Pakistan. Rwandan importers of Pakistani products are also expected to benefit from the arrangement.
