Rwanda and Tanzania are exploring the possibility of improving their cooperation in the defence sector. This was revealed by the Rwandan envoy to Tanzania, Maj Gen Charles Karamba, after his meeting with the Tanzanian Minister of Defence and National Service, Innocent Bashungwa in Dar es Salaam recently.
The meeting reviewed the status of the existing MOU between the two countries on defence including the cooperation under the EAC (East African Community) Defence Protocol where both are members.
In the past few years, Rwanda and Tanzania have been discussing how to sustain and improve bilateral cooperation in the defence sector. In 2021, The (former) Chief of Defence Forces of Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF), General Venance Mabeyo paid an official visit in 2021 and met the Minister of Defence, Maj General Albert Murasira and also his counterpart, Gen Jean-Bosco Kazura. The discussions led to an agreement by both countries to cooperate closely in border control and crime prevention, as well as sharing information and intelligence on transnational crimes. The discussions were followed up during the visit of Gen Kazura to Tanzania the same year. An MOU on defence cooperation was signed in 2021, between Rwanda and Tanzania during the Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) meeting held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
