Rwanda which is currently focussing on positioning itself as an innovation hub is trying to push digital transformation through collaboration with tech giant Google. The tie-up is expected to boost development in several areas including a flagship fintech innovation programme, start-up and developer ecosystem and digital skilling. Focus sectors of include digitization of SMEs, places, and arts and culture and also policy cooperation.
Esther Kunda, Director General, Innovation and Emerging Technologies at the Ministry of ICT and Innovation, said that the programme will be built on three pillars including training and community building to support developers, Incubation support for fintech startups, as well as corporate innovation to support the private sector to build and incorporate fintech into their institutional innovation. Google with the Ministry of ICT and Innovation and Kigali Innovation City will jointly promote Rwandan start-ups in Google’s pan-African accelerator programme, known as Google for Start-ups.
Google in partnership with Rwanda ICT Chamber, will also support SMEs grow their online presence by training iWorkers, basically, young people using digital platforms to set up a Google Page and on Google Ads. Google will support the National Museums of Rwanda to digitize museums and cultural heritage places.
