Rwanda deplores the non-approval of its ambassador to Belgium

Rwanda described as “regrettable” the refusal to approve its ambassador to Belgium and asserted that it did not augur well for bilateral relations. The nominee of Rwanda for ambassadorship to Belgium was Vincent Karega, Rwanda’s former ambassador to South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).  He was expelled last October from DRC  after months of tension between the two countries.  Rwanda feels that the decision not to approve its ambassador to Belgium was due to pressure from the DRC government.

Belgium is expected to communicate on this subject through diplomatic channels. But the country’s spokesperson; but insists that it is looking for calm and constructive relations with Rwanda. The DRC decided in October to expel Vincent Karega, accusing Kigali of supporting the M23 (“March 23 Movement”), which is alleged to have created havoc in DRC, although Rwanda refutes its involvement with the militant group. The US and UN substantiate shreds of evidence to show the complicity of Kigali.

Kinshasa has accused Rwanda of arming the rebellion and fighting alongside it. Belgium was the colonial power in Congo (now the Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly Zaire). Ruanda-Urundi gained independence in 1960.  In 1962, it was split into Rwanda and Burundi.
