  • A Chinese national has been sentenced to 20 years in jail by the Rwanda court for torturing local mineworkers in Rwanda.

Rwanda and China celebrated the 50th anniversary of strong diplomatic ties last year. But a recent development of a Chinese national brutally torturing a mine worker has become a blemish in the two- way ties.

A Chinese national has been sentenced to 20 years in jail by the Rwanda court for torturing local mineworkers in Rwanda. Sun Shujun, the manager of Ali Group Holding Ltd, a mine in Rwanda, that produces cassiterite,  the main ore of tin, was convicted along with an accomplice. Last September he was arrested after a video showing him whipping a man tied to a post went viral on social media.

Sun, who admitted his assaulting two workers, said that he took the extreme step due to his severe frustration due to their constant stealing. He tried for a settlement with the victims by offering more than one million Rwandan francs ($1,000) and signing a reconciliation letter that was rejected by the court.

Another manager at the company, who was found as an accomplice of Sun was sentenced to 12 years in jail.
