Rwanda and Mozambique have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote economic ties between the two countries. The agreement was signed by Rwanda Development Board (RDB) on behalf of Rwanda and APIEX of Mozambique on October 6.

Zephanie Niyonkuru, Deputy Chief Executive at RDB, stated that the  MoU is expected to boost trade and investment by private sectors in both countries. Among the potential sectors are Agriculture and Agro-processing, infrastructure, energy, and tourism. The government of Rwanda he said is taking appropriate measures to facilitate logistics between the two countries. RwandAir is in the process of launching a direct flight to Mozambique to facilitate transport and logistics between the countries . The launch of direct flights will boost bilateral economic ties significantly as currently, Rwandans travelling to Mozambique have to pass through Johannesburg or Addis Ababa.

He pointed out that Mozambique with its geographical advantages like direct access to ocean and market connectivity to five countries offers opportunities for companies. Gil Bires, Director General at APIEX observed that the agreement will enhance bilateral ties beyond diplomatic relations to embrace business and trade.

He remarked that investment in Mozambique should be viewed from a regional perspective. He added that partnership in agriculture offered excellent scope as Mozambique was part of the SADC (South Africa Development Community), giving access to other members in the bloc.  He also assured that the incentives available to local investors will be available to foreign investors as well.

The Mozambican delegation held meetings with Rwanda Private Sector Federation (PSF) to discuss areas of mutual interests. A Rwandan delegation is scheduled to visit Mozambique soon as a follow-up of the meetings.
