As an outcome of the peace talks hosted by Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda have agreed for a “de-escalation process” of the political tensions between the two countries. It was mutually agreed to curb the fighting along their shared eastern border, according to a statement issued by the Congolese presidency on July 6th.
The outcome was the result of talks hosted by Angola that offered to mediate between the two feuding African nations.
Angolan President Joao Lourenco who offered to mediate between the feuding neighboring countries announced that both countries have agreed on a ceasefire, and other measures to restore peace.
The roadmap toward normalizing diplomatic ties between Congo and Rwanda included ending hostilities between rebel groups of Congo, M23 and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, alias FDLR. A six-goal method of de-escalating violence also involved setting up a joint DRC-Rwanda committee which will hold its first meeting in the Angolan capital, Luanda, on July 12. There has been international concern about the alarming resurgence of armed groups in the region.
