RwandAir has announced that it has secured a deal with Tanzania to
transport cargo, mainly fish from Mwanza airport to Brussels,
Belgium. The Rwandan officials were in talks with the Tanzanian
government for some time to enable RwandAir to ferry fish from Mwanza
to overseas markets, especially Europe.
As a sequel to the agreement, RwandAir has operated a cargo flight
from Mwanza to Brussels carrying fish to Europe. The airline’s cargo
service will carry fish both from Kigali and Mwanza, in Tanzania.
The deal will provide relief for Lake Zone fish traders, who have
been seeking an alternative airline to transport their products
abroad. Wholesale fish traders from Tanzania were depending on
Entebbe and Nairobi airports, for fish exports, which was costly.
RwandAir has been operating cargo flights with the existing fleet
after countries imposed travel bans due to the coronavirus pandemic,
which saw many airlines across the world ground their planes. RwandAir
currently operates cargo flights to Brussels, London, and Guangzhou
in China.
