- Addressing the media after his meeting with President Samia Suluhu, President Ruto stated that Kenya intends to pursue the construction of a gas pipeline linking Tanzania’s main city, Dar es Salaam, to the coastal city of Mombasa and on to the capital Nairobi.
In his first state visit to Tanzania after taking oath as the President of Kenya, William Ruto was accompanied by a high-level delegation of officials and his wife Rachel Ruto. Tanzania is the second country after Uganda among the seven member states of the EAC to be visited by President Ruto after he took over the office in September.
Kenya and Tanzania witnessed growth in trade after the countries decided to remove the non-tariff trade barriers (NTBs) that had previously hindered cross-border trade. In her congratulatory message to Ruto on winning the elections, the President of Tanzania President Samia promised to continue to collaborate with Kenya, particularly in trade, agriculture, security, and other sectors, and work towards the socio- and economic development of both the countries.

The 600km gas pipeline at the estimated cost of $1.1bn is expected to reduce energy costs to the country. The initial agreement to transport gas from Tanzania to Kenya for power generation was signed in May last year, by Mr. Ruto’s predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta and Ms Suluhu.
Both the leaders advised their ministers to clear the remaining 14 trade barriers by December this year.
