In 2024, Russia’s agricultural exports to Africa increased by 19%, surpassing USD 7 billion, as reported by Agroexport, a Russian federal trade center. This rise highlights Moscow’s strengthening food trade relations with the continent amidst growing demand for grains and staple foods.

Russian agricultural products were sent to 45 African nations, with Egypt being the largest importer. Exports to Egypt rose by 21%, mainly due to wheat, sunflower oil, legumes, flax seeds, molasses, and other items. The top five African importers of Russian food in 2024 also included Algeria, Libya, Kenya, and Tunisia.

Grains, particularly wheat, barley, and corn, made up 87% of the total agricultural exports to Africa. Other significant exports included oils and fats, meat, fish, and an increasing amount of dairy products.

Africa’s share of Russia’s wheat exports reached a record 38% during the 2023/2024 season, totaling 21.2 million tons. Currently, African nations account for over 50% of Russia’s wheat exports. Experts attribute this rising demand to Africa’s population growth and increased food consumption, with the continent’s population expanding at an annual rate of 2.3%, outpacing the global average.
