The oil-rich country and its president, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, have maintained strong ties with Moscow.  In September, Nguema visited Moscow and attended the Russian Energy Week International Forum

Russian military advisors are in Equatorial Guinea helping to train local forces working with elite guards to protect the President and the first family. Their numbers are reported to be between 100 and 200. Sources say they are stationed mostly in the capital city Malabo and Bata, the country’s second city.
