Since Capt. Ibrahim Traoré took power in a coup in 2022, Burkina Faso has strengthened ties with the Russian Federation
Russia’s exercise to reach out to countries in the Sahel region is gaining ground as Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Burkina Faso. His latest tour of Africa is on the media radar as he visits the penultimate country of this tour- Burkina Faso. It is his first visit to the West African nation. He will be visiting Chad also as the final leg of his tour this time.
Burkina Faso’s foreign minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore hosted his Russian counterpart. In his opening remarks at talks with Minister Traoré, Lavrov hailed rapidly developing relations that he attributed to agreements reached at the 2nd Russia-Africa summit last year.
Since Capt. Ibrahim Traoré took power in a coup in 2022, Burkina Faso has strengthened ties with the Russian Federation. Burkinabe officials who have traveled to Russia include the Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs Kassoum Coulibaly. Lavrov was grateful for what he called efficient assistance in finding solutions that helped Russia reopen its embassy in Ouagadougou.

Russia’s top diplomat was scheduled to meet on Wednesday (Jun. 5) with Capt. Ibrahim Traore. He will be visiting Chad also. Political analysts feel that Russia’s increasing engagements with Africa, particularly the countries in the Sahel region are to make its presence felt and to upstage the overwhelming presence of the ex-colonizers who continued their presence even after the countries gained independence because of their continued economic interests.
