There is considerable import of food grains including wheat by African countries particularly the North African countries. Ukrainian cities particularly capital city Kyiv witnessed Russian missile strike resulting in loss of lives and destruction to properties. Several people including foreign nationals  and students studying  in various universities in Ukraine and other cities were evacuated to their home countries. The process of evacuation is still on. One cannot speculate how long would the war will last and after that how soon the ports in Ukraine would start functioning.

It is significant to note that recently www.trendsnafrica.com has carried an editorial which analysed the takeaways from the recent held Africa-EU summit, which had thrown up some of the bilateral issues which require to be addressed immediately. Though the summit had taken a few days before the war between Russia and Ukraine broke out, the western forces will have to do a lot of thinking to carry the African countries on their side.

A large number of western countries have imposed sanctions on Russia  in addition to placing Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the lists of Penalties.

In an open session of the UN Security Council on Ukraine, Martin Griffiths, Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, UN said that the military operations have displaced hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians so far. While the western forces are together in imposing sanctions on Moscow, it is reported that 36 countries including China, India and Pakistan would abstain from voting.
