Russian nuclear agency Rosatom has stated that Russia and Uganda have agreed to work together in the field of nuclear energy. Uganda has been trying to use Uganda’s uranium deposits to develop nuclear power.
The deal was signed by a Rosatom representative and Ugandan Energy Minister Irene Muloni on the side-lines of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s general conference in Vienna. According to a statement issued by Rosatom, the deal has laid the foundation for specific cooperation between Russia and Uganda in the field of nuclear energy. Under the agreement both the sides will also work together to create nuclear energy infrastructure, the production of radioisotopes for industry, medicine, agriculture, as well as the training of personnel. The first memorandum of understanding on nuclear energy between Moscow and Kampala was signed in 2017, a year prior to the agreement with Beijing, which was signed in 2018.
Of late Russia has been trying to strengthen its influence and presence in Africa and State-owned Russian companies have played a key part of Russia’s Africa strategy.
