The national carrier of the Kingdom of Morocco, Royal Air Marco, is expanding its long-haul intercontinental network with the introduction of flights to Toronto, Canada. The North African carrier will also resume flights to Beijing, China, after a nearly five-year hiatus

Royal Air Maroc, one of the leading carriers between Africa and North America, will launch flights from Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport (CMN) to Toronto Pearson International Airport on December 8, 2024. This will be the airline’s second route from Morocco to Canada, complementing its service to Montreal-Trudeau (YUL). Flights will be operated three times a week on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner

According to data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, the Moroccan carrier currently serves Montreal up to 14 times a week with its Boeing 787s. However, it is not the only airline flying between Canada and Morocco. Air Canada currently operates six weekly flights from Montreal to Casablanca, while Air Transet offers two weekly services from Montreal to Marrakech.

Royal Air Maroc also plans to return to China after over four years. The airline will reinstate its route from Casablanca to Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) on January 20, 2025. The route was launched in January 2020 and suspended after a few weeks following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Flights will also be operated three times a week, departing Casablanca on Mondays, Thursdays, and Sundays. The airline will deploy its Boeing 787-9, offering up to 302 seats, including 276 in economy and 26 in business class. The schedule will operate as follows:

The airline currently does not offer any flights to China. According to Addou, the new route will primarily serve developing Moroccan tourism, with up to 80% of the traffic expected to be foreign tourists. The resumption of the 5,432 NM (3,375 km) route is also expected to strengthen economic relations and trade between Morocco and China.

Toronto Pearson Airport will be Royal Air Maroc’s fifth destination in North America. As of August 2024, it offers up to 38 weekly flights from its hub in Casablanca to Montreal, New York-JFK, Washington Dulles, and Miami. New York and Montreal are its top North American destinations, with twice-daily flights each. They are followed by Washington, with six weekly flights, and then Miami, with four weekly flights each way.

In addition to its US and Canada flights, Royal Air Maroc will resume flights to São Paulo Guarulhos International Airport(GRU)   on December 7, 2024. The service was also paused in 2020 due to the global pandemic. Flights will be operated three times a week on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays with the Dreamliner.

According to the airline, the resumption of direct flights between Morocco and Brazil’s financial capitals is in response to growing demand for business and tourism on both sides of the Atlantic. The Moroccan government also seeks to strengthen connectivity to and from the country ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it will co-host with Spain and Portugal.
