A 312 kilometre road connecting Congolese capital Brazzaville to
Yaoundé in Cameroon has become operational. This will facilitate
trade and peoples’ movement between the two countries. Conceived as a
part of the project to integrate the Economic Community of Central
African States (ECCAS), the proposed project when completed will
connect capitals of the eleven member countries of the economic
grouping. Financed mostly (90%) by the African Development Bank
(AfDB), the road entailed a cost of US$ 180 million. It begins from
Ketta and stretches upto Ntam on the Cameroonian border. Another
important road link at the implementation stage is between Congo and
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through a road-rail bridge over
the Congo River.
Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso, while inaugurating the
road exhorted the ECCAS countries to work for developing excellent
physical distribution by connecting every country in the region. The
road was constructed by Chinese company Sinohydro Tianji Engineering
Corporation Ltd. will open up the hinterland of the two countries and
would work as an enabler for catalyzing economic cooperation between
the two countries on the hand and the 11-member economic community,
which are part of the regional grouping.
Most of the goods for daily use for Congo, such as food, clothing,
textiles etc came from Cameroon. The turnaround was higher since the
road routes were long and not asphalt topped. Now, with the opening
of the road, the trade and other commercial activities between the two
countries will increase phenomenally. Back in 2014, Gabon, another
member of the economic grouping was connected with Congo by an asphalt
paved road. Congo-Cameroon is the second country in the sub-region
connected by road.
