The rise in food prices in the Republic of Congo continues unabated despite the measures taken by the government to rein in the high cost of living. Brazzaville exempted imported products from customs duties in October before publishing a decree in December of the same year to freeze the prices of necessities

The rise in food prices in the Republic of Congo continues unabated despite the measures taken by the government to rein in the high cost of living. Brazzaville exempted imported products from customs duties in October before publishing a decree in December of the same year to freeze the prices of necessities.

These measures were welcomed by civil society. But those measures did not have any impact.  Retailers seldom adhered to such fiat.  The prices still rule high in the country, consumers complain. For instance, a measure of mustard that used to cost 750 CFA francs is now 1500 CFA francs.:

According to the World Bank, more than 90% of countries experienced inflation above 5% in September.  The increase was much higher in food articles. This worked out to 18% for wheat between October 2021 and October 2022, 27% for maize, and 10% for sunflower.  Prices are expected to remain high until the end of 2024.  Despite its agricultural potential, the country is largely dependent on imports.   This entails nearly 700 billion CFA francs a year.
