Several thousands of people who fled deadly inter-ethnic clashes in northern Cameroon have started seeking asylum in neighboring Chad. The Red Cross is actively involved in rehabilitating the refugees.
There are about 3000 refugees as of now, which is likely to go up in the coming days since people in Cameroon are trying to escape the country before things get out of control. There is widespread violence in certain parts of the country, as reports suggest. The militants, according to the people crossed over to Chad, leave the women and children unharmed but kill men mercilessly by tying tyres around their neck and lighting fire. Refugees complain of lack of food and medicines in the affected areas, where a large number of children have been taken ill
The United Nations also reported killings and a number of injuries to people, who have been attacked. The clashes are between Musgum fishermen and Choa Arab herders and the disputes were triggered over access to water. Such clashes are relatively rare in Cameroon as compared to Chad and Nigeria, where farmers and nomadic herders often fight.
