Italians’ extreme love for Espresso coffee has led to a record export of coffee beans from Uganda to Italy this year, the highest in the last 30 years. In August, Uganda became the second-largest supplier of coffee to Italy surpassing Vietnam and behind Brazil. According to media reports, coffee shipments from Uganda jumped  21 percent in the year through September, with a third of that going to Italy.
Italy and Germany,  together accounted for more than 60percent of the European Union’s roasted coffee last year. Due to supply disruptions from Brazil and Vietnam, European buyers have started exploring new sources for the beans like Uganda and India.
Carlos Mera, head of agricultural commodities markets analysis at Rabobank in London remarked that Uganda is a successful case of production, expansion and promotion. Uganda claims to have the finest coffee beans that gave Robusta Coffee to the world. It is the eighth biggest coffee grower globally and the second-biggest in Africa after Ethiopia.
