Mali’s presidential election is postponed, as expected, which was announced recently. The reactions of locals in Bamako were mixed. The presidential election was originally scheduled for February 2024. Now, it would be delayed to a later date. A few Malians say that the chain of extensions was deplorable because one of the principles of the Republic is respect for commitments. But there is a sizable number of people who pin hopes on the junta to deliver.
The junta has cited technical problems for postponement of elections including the adoption this year of a new constitution and an electoral list review. The government has yet to announce new dates, saying they will be communicated at a later stage. Legislative elections originally scheduled for the end of 2023 have also been delayed until after the presidential election takes place. What would be the reaction of the ECOWAS to the postponement of the election is still not out. Analysts say there is less likelihood of sanctions being reimposed.
