South African President Cyril Ramaphosa slammed ‘health apartheid’ followed by certain nations in the midst of pandemic. The South African President was on a visit to Ivory Coast and had a detailed talk with his counterpart at Abidjan, during his whirlwind tour to various countries in Africa. The apartheid, he described, as a slap on the face of African excellence and expertise.
Ramphosa has talked against the discrimination meted out to African countries in the name of pandemic by imposing various travel bans, which greatly affected the economic recovery of African countries. He called upon countries which have imposed travel bans on African countries to urgently reconsider their decision and lift those bans and allow people to travel.
It may be recalled that South African scientists announced on 25 November that they had discovered a highly mutated form of coronavirus. Subsequently, the variant has been detected in several other countries including the western countries like the US, certain countries in the EU etc. Also, three other African countries -Botswana, Ghana and Nigeria – have recorded cases.
Regretting the decisions taken by countries that imposed travel bans on southern African countries, Ramaphosa said the curbs were “regrettable, unfair, and unscientific and would cause untold damages, in particular to travel and tourism industries that sustain businesses and livelihoods in South Africa and the southern African region.
